About CityServ
A verified volunteer-service directory built for New York City — starting in the East Village. Every organization is cross-checked against independent, authoritative sources.
Our mission
CityServ was built by a student at Friends Seminary in New York City. The goal is simple: make it easy for anyone in the East Village, Lower East Side, and Alphabet City (ZIP codes 10003, 10009, and 10002) to find trustworthy volunteer opportunities.
Every organization listed on CityServ is cross-checked against IRS tax-exempt records, ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, and AmeriCorps grantee data. Organizations are also reviewed by the Friends Seminary Service Office before being featured.
We don't host sign-ups — each "Sign up" button goes straight to the organization's own registration page. No middleman, no hidden fees.
Transparency
How we verify organizations
Verification badges indicate that a named third-party source has the organization in its records. They are not endorsements of safety or quality.
IRS 501(c)(3)
GovernmentTax-exempt status confirmed via ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer and IRS Exempt Organizations data.
AmeriCorps Grantee
GovernmentOrganization is a current or recent AmeriCorps grantee, verified via AmeriCorps Open Data.
Charity Navigator Rated
IndependentRated by Charity Navigator with a published star rating and accountability score.
School Verified
SchoolReviewed and approved by the Friends Seminary Service Office as a partner organization.
Admin Verified
AdminManually reviewed by a CityServ administrator. Not a government or regulator endorsement.
Important: A missing badge does not mean the organization is illegitimate — only that we couldn't confirm it from that specific source. Admin-verification is a human check, not a regulator endorsement.
Trust Scoring
How trust scores work
Each organization receives a score from 0–100 based on multiple verification sources and community feedback. This score is a transparency signal, not an endorsement.
Multiple independent verifications — IRS, AmeriCorps, Charity Navigator, and admin-reviewed.
IRS 501(c)(3) verified plus admin review. Solid track record.
Basic verification complete — at minimum one independent source confirmed.
Organization listed but not yet independently verified. We're working on it.
